Marriage license
A marriage license may be a document issued, either by a spiritual organization or state authority, authorizing a few to marry. The procedure for obtaining a license varies between jurisdictions, and has changed over time. Marriage licenses began to be issued within the Middle Ages, to allow a wedding which might rather be illegal (for instance, if the required period of notice for the wedding had not been given).
